Brushes for woodworking

SIT considering the growing request of brushed products in the wood industry, introduces a wide range of tools designed together with our customers looking for the finest finishing on natural wooden products for floors, furnitures, roofs, indoor and outdoor covering.

Antique wood finishing, texturing

Wood brushing or “antiquing” is the wood manufacturing process where industrial brushes are used to give the wooden plank a more “antique” and natural feel and appearance than a smooth wooden piece.
It’s recommended a two step (at least) brushing process: the first steel wire brush digs the wood softer part highlighting harder grains. Then an abrasive nylon brush provides a finer finishing by removing burrs, chips and imperfections left by the steel wire brush.

For aging-effect/texturing brushes with following filaments are recommended:

Crimped steel from 0,20mm – 0,008” to 0,50mm – 0,020” wire section

Liz steel cord, available in two wire sections: 0,175mm – 0,007” and 0,25mm – 0,010”

Abrasive Nylon in grits 46, 60, 80, 120, 180, 320

Dusting and varnish spreading

For dust removal and for painting/paint distribution SIT recommends the use of brushes with filaments that don’t get electorstatically charged while working, like:

Horse hair

Tampico (plant fiber) that also has a very light abrasive action.

The cylindrical brushes can be manufactured with different diameters and lengths, as well as with different filaments based on a custom design

D = brush outer diameter
LU = useful length
C = tube diameter
F = arbor hole diameter

The secret to allow users of SIT brushes to obtain the desired output on different wood species, relies on a few operating parameters:

  • Conveyor belt (or roller) speed. This determines the wood profile feed rate
  • Number of brushes in line
  • Types of filament
  • Filament trim length
  • Winding pitch (for spiral brushes) or pitch between the holes (for staple set brushes)
  • Interference (depth of penetration) between filaments and surface being processed
  • Brush rotating speed
  • Brush rotating direction: towards or against the profile feed direction.

Test Area and brushing machine

Inside SIT manufacturing plant we installed a Test Area with a 4 brushing stations woodworking machine, provided by a leading italian manufacturer. This machine, originally manufactured for parquet flooring treatment, gives the possibility to test the wide range of industrial brushes for woodworking in order to satisfy SIT demanding customers.

Manual wood brushing

SIT supplies a wide range of roller brushes that can be mounted on the main wood brushing machines (SCM, Costa, Griggio, Volpato, …) for industrial woodworking but also a wide range of roller brushes for wheel sanders that are one the most commonly used tools for antique wood finishing and texturing. Abrasive and steel (brass, stainless, Liz) roller brushes can be mounted on the main wheel sanders like Makita, Festool, Flex and normal angle grinder with our patented adapter.
