Brushing Units for conveyor belts

Conveyor belts, transporting every kind of material, require a frequent maintenance as slugs and residues, when not removed after unloading, will accumulate on the pulleys and on the guide rollers causing wear, tear and damages to the belts.
Brushing Units are designed and manufactured by SIT to obtain a radical cleaning of the belts, to avoid clogging and inconvenience that takes place with other types of cleaner.
These patented systems for belts cleaning are made up with a special roller brush with helical segments, strips or eventually with a spiral brush..

Brushing Unit are made of a modular frame on which brush and engine are mounted. The frame can be easily fixed to the conveyor belt’s structure with tightening bolts.
Engines usually mounted are asynchronous three-phased, 3 PH 220/380 V. Tension, 50Hz, closed construction, external ventilation and rotor. Protection IP44. Different construction forms for UST type and for USLT type. The brush is actuated by the electrical engine along with a driving belt (USLT) or a geared-engine (with helical coaxial gears) with elastic joints (UST).
The brushing pressure can be adjusted by the pulling rods on the sides. The body of the brush consists of a steel shaft carrying turned cast iron disks, on which the Strip brushes are mounted using aluminium dowels screwed on them.

Brushing Units types

Standard Brushing Units differ for the way the engine is keyed on the motor shaft, and for the way the brushes are fixed to the frame.

UST Standard Brushing Unit

with driving gear motor keyed on the rotation axis of the brush. They are recommended for large conveyor belts’ cleaning, for harder working conditions and for the transportation of wet and doughy materials. Standard outer diameter Ø 300mm. Ø 270mm – 10-⅝” → 350mm – 13-¾” available on demand.

USLT Light Brushing Unit

engine not in axis with the brush, lighter fastening system but longer time to change the brush. They are recommended for smaller conveyor belts, for light working conditions and when there are installation constraints. Standard outer diameter Ø 200mm – 7-⅞”. Ø 180mm – 7” → 260mm – 10-¼” available on demand.

Brushing Unit Choice

D = диаметр вала / shaft diameter
d = pulling bar diameter
l max = pulling bar length
X = support’s interaxis
B = gear lateral dimension
C = bar-shaft interaxis
E = pulling rods-shaft interaxis
HP = engine horse power

Brushing Light Unit Choice USLT

USLT: Light Brushing Unit with pulling rods

L: larghezza nastro / belt width
A: lunghezza modulo / useful brush length
X max: interasse supporti / support’s interaxis

Belt’s and brushing unit’s operating parameters

The Brushing Units must be mounted in parallel with the conveyor belt, exactly where the belt leaves the head-drum or immediately behind the vertical axis of the drum making sure that the supports are aligned. If the Brushing Units are mounted in any other position, an idle roll must be placed against the other side of the belt, so that the brush operates where the belt is tight.

Power supply must be provided in order to start and stop both brush and conveyor belt at the same time. Keep in mind that the filament tips are constantly under working stress, therefore an excessive pressure would decrease the whole Unit’s brushing effectiveness and accelerate the brush wear-out.

Pressure can be regulated by adjusting the pulling rods on both Brushing Unit’s sides.
This improves strip’s life without effecting cleaning performance on the conveyor belt.

Strip brushes replacement is very simple and doesn’t require the disassemblying of the whole Unit. The wedges, held by a set of screws can be easily loosened, then strip brushes can be pulled out either sideways or radially at convenience.

The brush rotational speed must be carefully chosen in accordance to both the conveyor belt’s speed and the type of material to be removed. Brush rotational direction must be opposite to the conveyor belt’s one.

Request For Quotation

In order to define the right Brushing Unit for conveyor belt some variables have to be determined:

  • Brushing Unit type – Belt’s width
  • X dimension (foot support’s interaxis tied up to the conveyor)
  • Brush speed in RPM (see chart above)
  • Electric engine size and specs
  • Conveyed material’s type and nature and speed in m/s or ft/min

Every Brushing Unit supplied by SIT complies with the Machinery Directive 89/392/CEE.
Every Brushing Unit comes with a pratical instruction manual, it’s test certificate, and the declaration of incorporation.
Upon request protective equipment for the gearmotor and engine system can be provided (both for UST and USLT).

Brushing Unit UST type 700/900 x 388 rounds (UST type 700, X = 900mm – 35-½”, rotational speed = 388 RPM).
3 phased electric engine 220/380 V, 50 Hz. Carried material (hypothesis) = carbon particles with speed of 2 m/s – 358 ft/min.

Brushing Units Advantages

Every material handling industry and every conveyor belt have the material carryback problem (residual layer of material that sticks onto the conveyor even in the comeback section). SIT Brushing Units:

  • Avoid premature wear of conveyor belts and machine parts due to the material build up all around the conveyor belt and inside the machine
  • Avoid the reduction in operating efficiency of the whole plant
  • Reduce maintenance and cleaning costs
  • Avoid expensive material loss (can be gathered and reused and not lost inside the machine)
  • Avoid belt’s clogging and tracking problems
  • Avoid unsafe working conditions (since working environment and machines are cleaner)

These problems can be partially solved with traditional scrapers but SIT Brushing Units:

  • Don’t damage at all the belts (filament tips do the cleaning and don’t scratch the belt)
  • Are easier to change (since only the brushes have to be changed, not the whole scraper)
  • Can be used on any kind of conveyor, belt, roller, chain, …
  • Can be more expensive in the beginning (initial purchase) but re cheaper from a Total Cost of
  • Ownership perspective (cleaning effectiveness, long term maintenance and changeover
